The Youtuber Bellular expects and explained: World of Warcraft still has 2 million active players - in the best case.
The game numbers of World of Warcraft have been a great puzzle for years. After all, Blizzard does not give up official data out so that other analysis techniques and speculation must be prepared. The Youtuber and Streamer Bellular has made it possible for years ago to re-evaluate the current state of WOW again and again. He comes with his research on the result: Wow may have 2 million active players - and only in the best case.
What happened? In one of his latest videos, Bellular draws several current statistics together and compares them with the numbers from previous WOW extensions and patches. Even if all mentioned aspects are quite interesting, a number stands out. So he says: Wow has currently between 1.2 million and 2.0 million active players.
How do the data come about? in different ways. Most of it is read out about the Blizzard API and the Armory, ie the database of all WoW characters. Due to the local updates, it can be seen how many characters are actively played and approximately at level 60 or have chosen a pact. Together with other pages, such as Raider.io you can still capture a few more data.
The most important figure is the amount of performance of 2,691,799 from 2 August. This is the number of characters chosen a pact in Shadowlands and has logged in within the last month, so that an update took place in the database. So these are characters that either reached level 60 or as a second character have chosen the threads of fate on stage 50 in Oribos.
However, around 2.7 million characters can not be equated with 2.7 million active accounts. Because this number does not calculate how many players play more than an active character at the same time. Who maintains numerous twinks (Alts), would have to be expanded, as well as players who talk several accounts at the same time.
- If each player plays average 1.5 characters, then the active number of players would be around 1.8 million.
- If each player plays 3 characters on average, then the active player number would be about 900,000.
The actual number will probably be somewhere in between.
However, one must also say that the data does not capture some players who are also considered active, but not in the endgame are on the road. Characters that are currently still in the level phase or even role players who never achieve level 60 with their characters will not be recorded.
How has the player number changed over the years? This is difficult to say. In the first years of the life cycle of World of Warcraft, Blizzard has published game numbers. The climax experienced World of Warcraft in 2010 with just over 12 million active subscribers. Since 2015 - at that time there were still 7.1 million subscribers - there are no official figures anymore.
However, the trend analyzed by Bellular also coincides with the data from other pages and analysis methods. Thus, the amount of mythical + dungeons completed in Season 2 has drastically decreased by Shadowlands, as well as the amount of RAID visits in the Sanctum of Rule. Or expressed differently: significantly fewer players romp in the endgame than a few months ago.

Scandal not yet included: Particularly worrying is the great protest wave against Blizzard, which led to the departure of numerous players, is not yet invoiced. Accordingly, it would be quite possible that the current numbers still have a little dark look and the actual player has arrived on a new all-time low.
Despite everything, one should not forget that it is not official numbers, but these were compiled from different sources. An exact value of the current subscription numbers and players probably only knows Blizzard themselves.
What do you think about these numbers? Does that coincide with your perception and experience? Or do you think the numbers are actually much bigger or smaller?
